Puerto Maldonado
Puerto Maldonado is your gateway town to Peru’s southern Amazon Rainforest. And there are some fantastic rainforest lodges and tours to choose from.
Puerto Maldonado is a sleepy town and is very unique among Amazon Rainforest gateways as the wildlife-rich Tambopata National Reserve is very nearby.
Tambopata National Reserve
The Tambopata National Reserve protects 274,690 hectares of tropical forest and is home to an incredible diversity of Amazon animals and plants.
You can find all of the Big Three animals to see in South America, which are the giant otters, jaguar and tapir. There are also many endemic species found nowhere else on Earth. Tambopata is also where you can find the largest macaw clay licks in Amazonia.
