Posada Amazonas
A great choice for a short tour, the community owned Posada Amazonas Lodge sits in a community reserve close to the main Tambopata protected area and provides tours of the Tambopata Amazon. Enjoy lake tours, visiting the clay lick, and searching the rainforest for a variety of animals.
Refugio Amazonas
Another fantastic lodge for a short tour or family Amazon vacation, Refugio Amazonas Lodge offers guided wildlife tours through Amazonia, lake tours, and visits to a nearby parrot clay lick. On guided tours through the rainforest, see a number of different rainforest animals. Recently, the lodge has found a number of harpy eagle nests near the lodge and they have been the subject of many fantastic photographs.
Tambopata Research Center
The deepest lodge on this list, Tambopata Research Center provides one of the largest clay licks in the Amazon Rainforest, guided rainforest walks to see different Amazon monkeys, and opportunities to see more diverse and larger rainforest life owing to its deeper position within Tambopata National Reserve.
Parrot Clay Licks
Offered at all three lodges, clay licks provide a great place for wildlife. The clay draws in parrots, parakeets, monkeys, and other animals to obtain different minerals and the medicinal clay itself helps neutralize toxic compounds found in forest fruits. The largest lick is offered at the Tambopata Research Center where the lick is particularly attractive to many different macaw parrots. Enjoy fantastic photography opportunities as you observe a raucous display of sound and color.
Wellness Center
At the Refugio Amazonas Lodge in the Tambopata Amazon, enjoy a wellness center to receive a massage and choice of spa treatments so you can truly relax and unwind in the rainforest environment.
Canopy Towers
Climb canopy towers for a bird’s eye view of the Amazon Rainforest as you gaze out over the Tambopata region to see toucans, parrots and other birdlife high in the trees. Both the Posada Amazonas and Refugio Amazonas offer a canopy tower. The Tambopata Research Center then offers a small tower to observe a nearby swamp area inhabited by blue and gold macaw parrots.
Ese Eja Day
Enjoy experiencing a day in the life of a traditional Ese Eja community member. Begin by picking up a clay bowl, which is centuries old, as a member of the Ese Eja tribe teaches you about her community’s artisanal tradition.
Watch as she creates woven baskets and lifelike wood carvings. The Infierno Community is located next to the community-owned Posada Amazonas Lodge. Experience traditional food, see different handicrafts, and visit a sustainable jungle farm operated by the community.
You can enjoy this activity on the Refugio Amazonas Lodge, private Amazon Villa, Tambopata Research Center or Posada Amazonas Lodge tour.
Lake Tours
Explore different lakes in the Puerto Maldonado Amazon region to find lake wildlife, such as primitive-looking hoatzin birds, different fish, giant Amazon otters, caiman crocodilians, water birds, turtles, horned screamers, and monkeys at the lake’s edge. Lake tours are offered from both the community owned Posada Amazonas Lodge and the Refugio Amazonas Lodge. If you’re specifically searching for giant amazon otters, you have a higher chance of spotting them at the Posada Amazonas as the lake is home to a resident otter family.
Rainforest Walks
More trails are offered at the Tambopata Research Center but guided rainforest walks are also part of the experience at the Refugio Amazonas Lodge and Posada Amazonas Lodge. Enjoy walks to find Amazon animals, medicinal plants, clay licks, Brazil nut trees, and enjoy night walks scouting for nocturnal wildlife.
Citizen Science
As a beneficial activity to knowledge, enjoy a taste of life as an Amazon researcher. When evening comes, head out with our research team to the light trap in the hopes of finding new species.
Study certain types of insects and learn how to identify the species. A species completely new to Science is discovered one a month in this region, which means you can provide valuable help.
You can enjoy this activity at the Refugio Amazonas Lodge or the private Amazon Villa.
Amazon Aerobotany
Combining Biology with Technology, help researchers explore the rainforest using video drones. Take photos from high over the canopy to discover the species that grow high above the forest floor.
From the tall canopy tower, help researchers program the drone for its daily route then learn about the photographs helping to reveal this hidden area of Amazonia.
You can enjoy aerobotany at the Refugio Amazonas Lodge or the private Amazon Villa.
Amazon Birdwatching
Another popular activity is birdwatching in the Amazon Rainforest. It’s common in Amazonia that small reserves of tropical forest are home to more species than entire countries.
Enjoy walking in the rainforest with a birding guide as a bright flash of color catches your eye. You will then set up the birding scope and binoculars to get a closer look. Some favorite birds you can see on birdwatching tours include collared puffbirds, trogans, tanagers and a variety of parrots.
You can choose beginner, moderate, hardcore or advanced birding experiences. Each differs with how long the tour lasts and how many habitats you will visit to find the most species and some of the more elusive varieties.
Birdwatching programs are offered at the Posada Amazonas Lodge, Refugio Amazonas Lodge and the Tambopata Research Center.
Rainforest Tattoo
A frequent question to TourTheTropics, what is a rainforest tattoo? Giving a glimpse into local Amazon culture, a knowledgeable guide will prepare a past of huito and achiote and then you can apply temporary dark blue and red tattoos that last for several days.
Sunset Cruise
Offered at the Tambopata Research Center in the middle of Tambopata National Reserve, enjoy a sunset cruise among the sounds of a Tambopata evening. The lodge provides wine and hors d’oeuvres. The cruise lasts 2 hours with 1/2 bottle of wine per person.
