Sanbona Explorer Camp provides an immersive and unfenced experience of the San environment from Sabona Reserve. Our 2 night walking safari offers an adventurous and authentic experience as we explore the Sanbona Karoo during the day then enjoy the campfire and food of an evening. Enjoy the Sanbona Reserve where your guide will show you the animals, birding opportunities, cultural history and natural history of the area.

  • The Explorer Camp operates during the summer months with the first trail in October and the last trail at the end of April
  • Each trail is 2 nights with a set departure each Friday of the week
  • The walking trails are hosted and guided by an armed qualified walking guide
  • Distances walked vary each day but can last up to 4 hours each
  • A game viewing vehicle remains in camp and depending on where guests walk that day, the trail may start from camp or depart camp by vehicle to visit another area of the reserve
  • We regret that no persons younger than 16 years or older than 60 years will be able to participate. However, if a medical certificate can be provided via the client or the booking agent, exceptions to this will be allowed.

Accommodation

The camp site is unfenced to provide the true explorer ambience and tents are placed in fairly close proximity without encroaching on another tents privacy. Wild animals are able to cross through the camp at any time and although all safety precautions have been followed in setting up the camp; this remains a reality.

All meals are prepared and enjoyed under the Karoo skies

2 x Outside showers shared by all by guests (water is heated via the sun or on cold days via a fire for extra warmth). Each tent has an en-suite bio box toilet (portable) with canvas for privacy.

Getting To Sabona Reserve

Sanbona is situation on the Route 62 between Montagu and Barrydale.

From Cape Town
An easy 3 hour drive, approximately 270 kms from Cape Town. On commencement of the journey, travel on the N1 from Cape Town in the direction of Paarl; continuing on the N1 travel through the Huguenot Tunnel. A tollgate controls this tunnel. A tollgate fee is payable at the tunnel. The first town is Worcester set in the Breede River Valley. Taking the second turnoff to the right into Worcester, you leave the N1 and the Route 60 (R60) is taken. Follow the signs to the town of Robertson. Once through Robertson, the next town is Ashton. The R60 becomes the R62 in Ashton. Travel on through Krogmanskloof and Montagu. Continue for approximately 43 km and turn left at “Die Vlakte” and Sanbona Wildlife Reserve sign. Please be advised that the road changes from tar to gravel and the recommended speed limit from there on is 60 km per hour. The main entrance to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is 7 km.

From the main gate, it is a further 15 km to the welcoming lounge where guests will be welcomed. From the welcoming lounge, it is 45 minutes to Tilney Manor, 65 minutes to Dwyka Tented Lodge and 55 minutes to Gondwana Lodge. Please follow the relevant signs in the reserve. The recommended speed limit is 40 km per hour. Do not exit your vehicle. Predators roam free. The main gate closes at 18h00, should your arrival time be later, please advice prior to arrival in order to make arrangements. A daily transfer from the main gate to your lodge is available on request, and must be booked at least 72 hours in advance.

From Oudtshoorn

Follow the Route 62 for 175 km via the picturesque Little Karoo villages of Calitzdorp and Ladismith to Barrydale.
From Barrydale follow the Route 62 towards Montagu for about 22km and turn right at "Die Vlakte" and Sanbona Wildlife Reserve signs. Continue 7km to the main entrance.

The following program is a guideline as all timings are subject to discussions upon arrival.

Day 1, day of arrival (Friday)

  • All guests arrive at the Sanbona Welcome Lounge by 12h00
  • Road transfer to a luxury lodge at 12h30
  • Meet you specialist guide who will host you for lunch at one of Sanbona’s luxury lodges
  • Transfer in an open game viewing vehicle to the Explorer Camp
  • Camp orientation
  • Afternoon walk
  • Sun downer snacks and drinks are enjoyed upon return to camp
  • Enjoy dinner and an evening around the fire

Day 2 (Saturday)

  • Early rising can be expected due to the nature of walking and temperatures during summer
  • Enjoy muffins, fruit sticks, biscuits, tea and coffee amongst mother nature
  • Morning walk commences and can last up to 4 hours, depending on temperatures
  • Enjoy a hearty brunch upon return to camp
  • Relax in your hammock, catch up on some rest or simply adore the wild
  • A variety of light sandwiches with fresh fruits will be enjoyed for lunch
  • Afternoon hike
  • Sun downer drinks are enjoyed in the bush, close to camp
  • Enjoy dinner and an evening around the fire

Day 3, day of departure (Sunday)

  • Early rising can be expected due to temperatures during summer
  • Enjoy a breakfast in the bush before departing at 10h00 in order to meet up with the transfer from one of Sanbona’s luxury lodges to be back at the welcome lounge by 12h30
  • A brief walk on morning of departure is optional

Prices Per Person
All rates are invoiced in South African Rand (ZAR) on “per person per night” basis.
Above mentioned rates are inclusive of all meals, beverages, walking activities, tourism levy and 14% Vat.
All rates are subject to change without prior notice.

Adults travelling:

Adult Sharing rates apply to persons (16 years and older) sharing one tent.
Single Adult rates are only applicable when one adult is staying by him/herself in one tent.
Note that all tents can sleep a maximum of two adults.
A minimum stay of two nights (Friday and Saturday) must be booked per reservation.

Important Notes

Sanbona Explorer Camp is sold as a two night walking trail package; therefore two (2) nights are automatically booked and payable at the time of reserving this unique experience.

  • Participants older than 60 years will be required to provide a medical clearance certificate in order to participate.
  • Please ask your reservations consultant for more information regarding a third night at any our five star, luxury lodges.
  • Bookings for the Explorer Camp are only confirmed once the guests have signed the booking form.

      Transfer From Welcoming Lounge

      A complimentary transfer from the welcoming lounge to the different lodges is available on request and must be booked at least 72 hours in advance; please contact reservations in order to book these arriving guests are picked up from the welcoming lounge at 12h30 or 16h00 (guests arriving on the later transfer will not be able to join the afternoon game drive)departing guests are picked up from their lodge to be back at the welcoming lounge by 12h30

      Provisional Reservations

      Not available to reservations between 15 December and 11 January as well as between 1 to 29 February (traveling dates).
      Subject to availability; i.e.: should we have limited suites available, only confirmed bookings will be accepted.
      Made less than 30 days prior to arrival will be held for a max of 72 hours.
      Made 60 - 90 days prior to arrival will be held for a maximum of 7 working days.
      Made more than 90 days prior to arrival will be held for a maximum of 14 working days.
      Should confirmation not be received by the given date; the booking will be automatically released and can only be re-instated on the basis that the booking is confirmed/guaranteed.
      Full names of guests traveling will be required to convert the status from provisional to confirm.

      Payment

      Full pre-payment is required 60 days prior to arrival.
      Shamwari Game Reserve reserves the right to release bookings, should payment not be received by the requested date.
      Any discrepancies on the confirmation/pro forma invoice must be addressed at the time of booking.
      All bank charges are for the account of the tour operator and will not be paid by Shamwari Game Reserve.
      ll payments made by credit card are subject to a 5% transaction fee (based on the total transaction value).
